Glucomannan: What Is It And How Does It Work?

In a world filled with supplements, vitamins, and health aids the vocabulary can become very overwhelming, very quickly. Store employees and bloggers throw around industry specific language as if everyone has a doctorate degree in nutrition - and they even say everything so seamlessly you begin to question yourself as to why you don’t understand them!

We’re here to let you know you’re not alone… don’t worry, help is on the way. In this blog we’re breaking down one of the important ingredients that make Boombod what it is! So without further ado, here is the low down on our number one magic ingredient - Glucomannan!

What is Glucomannan?

Let’s get straight to it - Glucomannan is a water-soluble dietary fiber that comes from plants, more specifically their cell walls. Although there’s a variety of plants that have Glucomannan in them, one of the best sources is from the corm (root) of Konjac plant also known as an Elephant Yam.

Glucomannan is a dietary fiber it can be used for a number of purposes, and has been linked to multiple health benefits. However, for us at Boombod HQ, it serves the purpose of helping you feel more full after your meals and reducing your naughty cravings!

History Of Konjac & Glucomannan

Map Southeast Asia - Konjac Origins

The Konjac plant from which Glucomannan is extracted, grows in the wild in Southeast Asia. It’s use in food can be seen throughout the region in countries like; Japan, Korea, China, and Indonesia - where it has been used for over 1,500 years!

One of the best known uses (apart from Boombod of course!) is in Shirataki noodles, a Japanese noodle which uses ground konjac instead of flour to create a high fiber, and low calorie replacement to a traditional noodle.

Different Ways To Use Glucomannan

Despite Glucomannan being mostly associated with Konjac, it can also be found in other sources and has been used all over the world in different ways.

In Turkey they have created an ice cream dessert called Dondurma using “salep”. Salep is a flour made from the tuber roots of plants in the orchid genus whose main starch is glucomannan. This traditional Turkish treat can also be found in Greece where it is called “dudurmas” or “kaimaki”.

Due to Glucomannan’s viscous properties and its being water soluble, it is also used as a gelatin substitute. This is especially important in many vegan foods as gelatin is usually derived from animal sources, making Glucomannan an ideal plant based substitute. If your recipe is not calling for a full on gelatin, you can also use Glucomannan as an emulsifier or thickener to help bring together sauces instead of high calorie alternatives like wheat flour or cornstarch (but just be careful as it binds to water 10X more effectively than cornstarch!).
